Vocal Music or Vocal Music Education Requirements

Choose two pieces to sing for your audition:  

• One from classical repertoire (i.e., art songs, arias, or oratorios in English or other languages).
• One from musical theatre or the Great American Songbook.

An accompanist will be provided and you will have a brief rehearsal. Please bring a copy of your music for the accompanist. 

Auditions are not required for non-music majors to participate in ensembles or to be eligible for a potential scholarship.​

Instrumental Music or Instrumental Music Education Requirements

Brass, Woodwinds, Guitar, Strings, and Piano  

Be prepared for sight-reading and to play:

• One movement or etude at a faster tempo, demonstrating your rhythmic and technical skills.
• One movement or etude at a slower tempo, demonstrating your lyrical playing. 
• All major scales and a full-range chromatic scale from memory.

Percussion

Be prepared for sight reading on snare drum, marimba, and timpani and to play:

• Snare drum—One solo or etude of your choice (example: Delecluse, Albright, Peters, Cirone, Goldenberg, Wilcoxin, Pratt or any equivalent).
• Marimba and/or vibraphone or xylophone—One solo of your choice (example: G.H. Green rag, Peters, Stout, Abe, Bach, Smadbeck, Sammut, Musser, Rosauro or any equivalent).
• Timpani—One solo or etude (for at least three-to-four timpani preferred) of your choice (example: Goodman, Vic Firth, Peters, Delecluse, Schinstine or any equivalent).
• Drum set (optional)—Demonstrate various styles like rock/funk, jazz, Latin (bossa nova, samba, songo, mambo, calypso/soca, etc.) and/or be prepared for a solo.​

Acting Audition Requirements

Choose either two contrasting monologues or a monologue and a song. The monologue should be 1-2 minutes in length and from a published script.  (Contrasting examples - humorous/serious, classical/contemporary, etc.) If choosing to sing, prepare 16-32 bars of a song from a musical theatre or the Great American Songbook.  Please bring a backing track and sheet music with you.​

Technical Theatre/Design Portfolio

Provide 5-10 examples of your design/technical work, i.e. photographs of sets or costumes, sketches or drawings of costumes designed, stage management prompt books or documents (call sheets, prop lists, etc.), or excerpts of plays written or other creative writing (poems, short stories, etc.).

The Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship (NGHES) is offered by the Indiana Commission on Higher Education. Awarded to 200 high-achieving high school and college students (priority is given to high school students), this renewable scholarship is up to $7,500 each year for four academic years. In exchange, you agree to teach for five years at an eligible Indiana school or repay a corresponding, prorated amount.

If you are awarded the NGHES and have been accepted to Marian University, you are automatically eligible to have the remainder of your tuition covered along with the Next Generation scholarship.

Eligibility Criteria

For complete eligibility requirements, visit the Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship page on the in.gov website. To be eligible, you must:

• Be an Indiana resident who is a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
• Be a current high school senior or college student
• Graduate or soon-to-be-graduate from an accredited Indiana high school
• Rank in the top 20 percent of your high school graduating class or have a top 20 percent SAT or ACT score
• Plan to attend an eligible public or private university in Indiana
• Want to teach at an eligible Indiana school after completing your bachelor's degree
• Plan to obtain an Indiana teaching license and serve as a teacher at an eligible Indiana school for five (5) consecutive years after graduating from college
• Have a minimum 3.0 college GPA and complete at least 30 academic credit hours or their equivalent per year
• File the  Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

* The NGHES application opens on September 1 and closes on November 30. Finalists are typically selected in early January of the following year and award winners are notified in April. 

* Deadlines and enrollment requirements are determined each year by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.

Are you a talented minority student who (1) wants to attend Marian University, (2) plans to pursue a career as a K-12 teacher, and (3) wants to teach in Marion County, Indiana for at least two years after graduation?

If this describes you, you may be eligible for up to $40,000 in scholarships thanks to the Walton Family Foundation.

Eligibility Criteria

• Self-identify as a minority or student of color
• Have a minimum cumulative 3.0 high school GPA
• Score a minimum of 1,000 on the SAT or 19 on the ACT
• Agree to teach in Indianapolis (Marion County) for at least two years after receiving your initial teaching license
