Biography
While in New York earning his Master’s Degree from NYU, Philip Kern played piano and keyboards for several Broadway shows including Cats, Some Americans Abroad, Nunsense, and Grand Hotel. He served as Associate Conductor for the Tony Award-winning production of Anything Goes starring Patti LuPone at Lincoln Center. On the road, Professor Kern played the national tours of Cats and Phantom of the Opera. During the summers of 1992 and 1994, he was the musical director for the Hot Summer Nights Program at the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music. In collaboration with his wife, Susan, and Jerry Lowe, Professor Kern wrote music and lyrics for It’s a Wonderful Life Musical which has been performed around the U.S. since its premiere at the Aronoff Center in Cincinnati in 1998.
