Naomi Schmalz, MSE


Naomi Schmalz, M.S. is an instructor of anatomy at Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine. Ms. Schmalz brings nearly ten years of experience teaching gross-, microscopic-, and neuroanatomy to undergraduate, graduate, and health professional students at multiple institutions, including Saint Louis University School of Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California – Los Angeles, IUPUI, and Indiana University School of Medicine. Ms. Schmalz’s ancillary educational pursuits are in community outreach and service-learning.

Ms. Schmalz earned her Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science with Honors from University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. Her undergraduate research focused on the management of injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament of the knee. While working as a fitness professional in Saint Louis, Missouri, Ms. Schmalz earned her Master of Science in Human Anatomy Research from Saint Louis University School of Medicine. She researched the dietary behaviors of medieval populations through the dental microwear analysis of dental remains recovered from England and Ireland. She is currently completing her doctoral dissertation at Indiana University School of Medicine in anatomy and cell biology and education, studying the longitudinal student outcomes of service-learning in undergraduate and health professional education.

Ms. Schmalz’s personal interests are varied; she enjoys backpacking, yarn and needle crafting, cycling, adventure tourism, and spending time with her family and cats.
